Abstract

In this paper we discuss how concepts and methods from fractal geometry are employed in design. We explain some of the fundamental concepts of this geometry (autosimilarity, fractal dimension) as a frame for analyzing how they are used by some designers. We argue, without neglecting the utility and importance of fractal geometry, that in many cases the use of these concepts in design is arbitrary, superficial and most inspired by the search of legitimacy from mathematics for design discurse.
