Construcción social de la discapacidad

Abstract

A multi-disciplinary approach is needed to the social building of disability. Equal to the social sciences that build theories towards a social model of the disability and the medical sciences that care for its prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, the designers and builders of the physical environmente can help to remove physical barriers that exclude a great number of persons, thus contributing to their social integration. Disability is not a category exclusive of a minority, because in certain periods of our lives, we all belong to it, with the resuling risks and limitations. Therefore, if we attend to the needs of persons with special requirements we will overcome rigid and corseted designs with more flexible solutions, adapted to the requirements of this population.
